BE-COMING HOME: all trussed up

Frisbeetarianism is the belief that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck.

There was a bit of on-again/off-again regarding the return of Berger Concrete and General Engineering to complete the excavation for and construction of the retaining wall around the carport, the portico, the basement stairs and the back steps.  In the end, Berger’s crew came in mid-week (September 4th) to measure and plan,

and to put in the forms for the basement stairs.  Then they disappeared again, clearing the way for the arrival of the roof trusses.

Gamers – yes, that was Table in the carport, providing a perch for the plans.  Table is a “she”, btw (feminine in all languages that assign objects gender), and she has a name.  Houston.  Check out her cameo appearance in the last blog, if you don’t believe me; she’s wearing a name-tag.

I actually caught Houston on the move from top floor to carport that day; here, at last, the secret of her astonishing mobility is revealed.

Friday 6 September was the big day.  The plan was to use a giant crane to hoist the huge trusses to the top of the house one-by-one and lower them into place. Though I am of the Night-Owl persuasion, I was up and out early that morning to catch the excitement.

Getting the trusses in place did prove exciting – though the excitement did not go as planned.   Our steep driveway was too much for the crane to handle.  So, instead of watching a piece of heavy equipment do the heavy lifting, we watched a handful of incredibly strong and determined guys haul 16 massive, massively heavy trusses off the truck,

up the driveway,

up the slippery dirt track to the back,

and re-stack them in the yard.

Terrifically heavy labor – and that was only Part 1.  Part 2 was manually lifting each truss from the stack,

and angling it up and over the 2nd floor balcony and walls.

Part 3 was lifting it yet again and setting it in place.

A full day of this back-breaking work, and the bulk of the trusses were up,

with just a few left to go.

  2. Great progress! The roof makes all the difference. I keep thinking it’s a church because I can see the buttresses ;-) A sacred space, indeed.

FYI: Table in German is masculine(der Tisch)!
